Chapter Thirteen

Jenna sat in the waiting room with Diane. They had both been prepped by the make-up team to ensure they would look right on camera, and now they were waiting to be announced. Jenna’s heart beat hard, and Diane was pale, her grayish-brown eyes wide in the bright light. They were called to a staging place where they were fitted with discreet microphones, then they heard their introduction and names announced. Diane walked out first to modest applause, and Jenna followed to a more enthusiastic welcome.

Ellen Bonney had virulent red hair cut short over her ears. Her trademark cat eye glasses hung around her neck and she stood to shake each woman’s hand. The applause died down and they sat.

“This has taken off across the country. Missing man, psychic readings, murder mystery, this story has everything.” She glanced at her notes and then addressed Diane. “So, Diane, tell us about Steven.”

“Ellen, he was just, I don’t know, sweet. And kind. He’d do anything for anyone.”

“It must have been hard when he disappeared,” Ellen said.

“It was just so unlike him. He always called to check in. Especially when his kids were coming over, ‘cause he knew I liked to see them. Then…nothing. I knew something bad must have happened.” Diane’s voice got tight, and she grabbed a tissue to dab at her eyes.

Ellen then shot her attention over to Jenna, who felt like a bird of prey had just spotted her. “Fast-forward twenty-five years, and Jenna Rayne comes into the story. Can you tell us how that came to be, Jenna?”

Jenna cleared her throat. “Well, a friend of mine asked if I would do a reading at his cousin’s place. So, I did.”

Images taken of the river house flashed on the screen above them.

Ellen leaned forward a little. “Was there a particular reason for this reading?”

“Just a general creepy feeling she got…like you get in some places.”

“So, you went out and saw…?”

“I saw a man get killed. He told me his name—Steven Brandt.”

“Didn’t I hear something about a cross?”

“Oh, yes, well I saw the cross fall from the cabin when he was strangled, and then I just dug it up.”

Gasps resounded from the studio audience.

“That was Steven’s—he wore it all the time because our mother gave it to him before she died,” Diane said.

“It’s just amazing that you saw all this, and it has all been supported by evidence. That cross, and then finding Steven himself on the property there.”

“I had nothing to do with that…”

“But so far, from what I’ve heard, your visions were on the money. I imagine you’ve been bombarded with requests.”

Jenna shrugged. “There have certainly been reporters hanging around my apartment—I’ve had to go stay with friends.”

“If someone needed your help, would you help them?” Ellen persisted.

“Of course.” Jenna frowned and was suddenly wary.

“So, if a member of our studio audience needed help with a similar situation, you would help them.”

Jenna started to panic. “Understand, I’m not really a psychic. I’m a medium, so I interact with the spirit realm.
